Off the bye, the Aggies get a Pac-12 measuring stick
Utah State is 2-4 and rested — a trip to 3-3 Texas State starts the stretch that will define its first Pac-12 season.
Utah State returns from its bye week with a road game at Texas State on Oct. 24, kicking off at 5:30 p.m. MT on CBS Sports Network at UFCU Stadium in San Marcos. The Aggies are 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Pac-12 play in the program's first season in the new eight-team Pac-12. Texas State is 3-3 overall and also 1-1 in the conference, so this is a meeting between two teams level in the early conference table, in a league where the top two teams reach the Pac-12 Championship Game.
The bye came after Utah State's most complete finish of the season. In their last game, the Aggies trailed Washington State 16-3 at halftime and won 17-16, scoring the final 14 points. Grady Brosterhous threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Eli Wood, Javen Jacobs added a 2-yard touchdown run, and two second-half takeaways helped close the comeback. Wood finished with six catches for 84 yards in that game and is the player to watch coming out of the bye: he was the Aggies' most productive receiver in their last outing, in an offense that has leaned on balance between Jacobs on the ground and Wood outside.
There is a longer historical footnote, carried in the Pac-12's own preview: the programs have met once before, a 38-7 Utah State win in 2012, Texas State's first FBS season. Fourteen years later both are league opponents, and the result in San Marcos counts directly in the new conference race.
